I chose this image as the video still because I think it's sassy - and when you're recovering from ankle surgery (even 5 months out), sometimes that's JUST HOW YOU FEEL.

a little more yoga after ankle surgery
There's a little more yoga progress happening all the time...and when I say "little", I REALLY MEAN JUST A FUCKING TEENY TINY BIT. Anyway, I believe I owe my progress to a lot of things - icing, walking, strengthening, pilates, massage - but yoga has been my main (and daily) go-to. It keeps me sane, makes me less sore, gives me a sense of movement when I still feel I have very few options. So I thought I'd share with you several of my main moves that have helped me see some added flexibility along the way (though again, I'm sure everything is contributing to it).

Thanks for responding to me the other day. Wow, it's crazy how long it takes to fully recover! I found your blog while searching for info on yoga with a broken ankle. I've never really done yoga...I've never been a very active person...but it's driving me crazy how achy and out-of-shape my whole body feels right now (6 wks post-injury, but without surgery). I tried to do a short chair yoga routine the other day, and I felt so weak and tired that I had to stop.
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to say that I appreciate your blog because...well, I'm a little obsessed with my ankle these days, and I don't want to subject my husband to too much talking about it. Poor guy is doing so much more work already, taking care of me and our two school-age kids. It's nice to have online support from other ankle-fixated people! Well, it's nice until I get sick of spending hours sitting in a chair reading and start fantasizing about how awesome it would be to STAND UP AND WALK across the room! -Lisa
Lisa,
DeleteMy cousin who's a nurse told me that for every day of bed rest, it takes a person 2 days to regain the strength you lost during that time. SO, with that said - do as much as you can all the time, even if it's just little stretches here and there. I know it's so exhausting - BELIEVE ME I KNOW - I'm assuming you saw my non weight bearing yoga vid but just in case: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS5HO311oB0
And yeah, the ankle obsession - 5 months out and it hasn't gone away. Thankfully it's more of a personal obsession and, since I'm more independent now, I don't have to burden other people with it. The other day J asked me, "should I still be asking if your ankle hurts? because you never mention it." I'm like "no you don't have to, but yes it does". You're definitely not alone there Lisa!!
Try my pillow method with the yoga - or if you want some other kind of movement help, I'd be happy to make another vid, just let me know what you're in need of :)
I can vouch for the pillow and doing yoga while in bed. I feel better after doing stretching and the exercises from my physical therapist. I go 2 or 3 times a week to PT and then every day do exercise at least twice a day. I've found that I don't get as much stretching in my calf muscles now so try to think of more ways to work those muscles. I mentioned it in PT and they just added another torture session of massaging my calf muscle! lol I can move my toes and feet alot more after going through PT the past few weeks.
