yoga after ankle surgery

I fantasize about yoga. I dream about it at night and I watch yoga videos during the day (shout out to Tara!), trying to imagine what it would be like to do a sun salutation again, or even just a downward dog.

The first time I got on the yoga mat post-surgery felt pointless. I rolled around on my back a little like a dying bug. I tried to sit up and extend my legs out in front of me, but my right leg was misbehaving and wouldn't straighten along the floor - the muscles in my ankle, calf and thigh were too rigid and my heel was too tender. I couldn't turn around and get on hands and knees, because the top of my foot wasn't flexible enough to rest flat on the ground. So I nixed the idea - considering myself doomed to spend a full 8 weeks on my back in bed - day...after day...after day.

UNTIL NOW. Watch my video - it's about my entrance back into post-op yoga. Though very small, I can feel that these steps are wonderful ones. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope that in the vast YouTube universe, other people in my situation will as well. (Also, please forgive my hair - I was scheduled for a cut/color the day AFTER my fall and obviously had to cancel. So now I'm like 5 weeks overdue and it shows. Sorry. Please love me anyway.).

  1. I broke my ankle and had surgery five days ago. Your posts have lifted my spirits; I see I'm not allowed to languish and snack myself better, but can make healthier choices - thanks!

    1. I'm so glad your spirits have been lifted! And trust me, the more healthy choices you make now, the better off you'll be once you're allowed to start weight bearing and moving around. Your body and mind will thank you. Let the healing begin!

  2. hi again, i enjoyed your yoga video--wondering how this compared to your recent hardware removal surgery- did u experience the same types of challenges on the mat--how are u doing now? scheduled to have my surgery oct 23 to romove pins and plate--one doctor told me no restrictions-on the mat in 5-6 days. the other, ankle specialist- is very cautious- wants me in a boot 24/7 for 2 weeks- both said i will be fully weight bearing and walk out of hospital on my own. can u do chatarungas?, waht still is challenging to u-are u afraid you might topple due to imbalances? how long before your pain subsided? thanks, cindy

  3. Healing from hardware removal is MUCH different than getting the hardware put in. I was partially weight bearing that same day. I was back on the mat in about 2 weeks (going slowly, of course). Yes I can do chaturanga. The hardest thing to recover was balance - standing or doing poses on that leg. It comes, but it takes time.

Love, love, love! Namaste and thanks again!

  6. I love the hair disclaimer. I broke my ankle and fibula the day of my scheduled hair appointment. It's been 5 weeks as well on top of the aditional 3 weeks I should have gone. Thanks for the video and words.

  7. Thank you for this blog and video! Since I broke my ankle and I’m still non weight-bearing I’ve spent way too much time surfing the Internet, and this has been the most uplifting and helpful in improving my spirits and my mobility. And I thought something was wrong with me that I get so tired so easily. I can do some of the yoga and stretching poses which will certainly have to take a higher priority than washing dishes in the sink!
